Company ProfileSweetgrass Baskets by Design grew out of a childhood dream to collect Low Country folklore and preserve the African traditions. My paternal grandmother was one of the original flower ladies and vegetable vendors in the city market of Charleston, SC at the turn of the century. She was famous for her home remedies and unusual recipes. As a young widow, she provided for her children and several grandchildren using only that which was provided by nature. Wild flowers, vegetables, and Sweetgrass baskets were her primary items for sale. Her legacy influenced three generations to continue with the profession of basket making and vendoring. As a child under her care, I was always moved and inspired by her creativity. I admired her humor, knowledge of folklore, and skill. Consequently, I have spent more than twenty years recording African American traditions. Sweetgrass Baskets by Design is a family effort to preserve the rich heritage of basket making, cultural traditions, and folklore.
